Abstract
The advent of cloud computing will drive a more frequent and popular utility rate of smart phones and the internet. Hence, the user demand for smart phone also becomes increasingly important. The advancement in information technology enriches the styles and functional characteristics of smart phones and scanning devices with more diversity. To meet user demand, the integration of scanning devices with smart phones becomes the key direction for future smart phone design. The study aims to discuss the user demand for scanning devices integrated with smart phones in university students with frequent use of such phones. The research method and steps are primarily divided into three phases. In Phase I, the study intends to understand the existing optical character recognition, photo scanning and scanning devices through the collection and discussion over literature review. For this reason, the study takes the application of scanning device on future smart phone design as the dimension of considerations. In Phase II, the study conducts a user demand survey on “scanning device integrated with smart phones” in university students as the study objects. With respect to the survey on functional characteristics, all respondents value the different functional characteristics. In Phase III, the study combines the various survey results and relevant literature review from Phase 1 and Phase II to develop guidelines for designing learning-based smart phones suitable for university students. Moreover, the study proposes a design on integrating scanning device with smart phones based on the design guidelines, followed by carrying out the design verification and assessment on the design outcome in this study. The verification of design outcome and results of evaluation show that all respondents value the different functional characteristics, indicating that university students desire to own comprehensive functions for learning-based smart phones and apply the functional characteristics of scanning device on the smart phones with flexibility. Finally, with respect to the acceptance and questionnaire survey on introducing scanning device to smart phones, the majority of respondents suggest that the integration of smart phones and scanning device is an inevitable trend of development for future smart phones. The respondents believe that the future conceptual smart phones proposed by the study, which can meet the learning-based user demand of university students.
