日本武士道的宗教倫理與現象

Abstract

本計畫旨在探討日本武士道的宗教倫理與現象，特別扣緊「近世」的德川時代及 過渡到「近代」的明治維新以後到戰前的階段。題為「宗教倫理」，擬有兩個面 向，其一是武士道本身「義理」的宗教性，即對一名武士而言，有其本身的盡忠 之職分倫理，而「忠」這個義理，涉及對「死」的覺悟或「生命永恆」之課題， 如「切腹」成為一個「死亡儀式」，具有空間場域展示的「宗教性」。其二是武士 道的修養直接與佛教有深厚的關係，戰國武將及諸侯大名、有名的劍客乃至一般 的武士，背後都有佛教信仰，而提供武士修練與徹悟生死學問，往往又都與禪學 相關。另外，題為「現象」，係就武士道結合佛教的生活哲學，高度地反映在其 日常生活當中而言，最常見的是茶道與劍道，故剖析此一武士生活「現象」，往 往又不可避免討論到禪學與武士生命學問的關係。再者，武士道的「現象」在近 代則擴大到與「國家主義」糾纏在一起，使得探討「武士道」，不得不深究其與 「佛教」、「神道教」和「國家主義」之間的關係，如此的「宗教」、「武士道」及 「國家主義」三者之間呈現既密切又緊張的不可分割之關係。本研究將以「武士 道」為核心，以三年研究為期，探索它的「宗教倫理」及其特殊的「現象」。

This project delves into the religious ethics and phenomena associated with Japanese bushido, with particular focus on the period between the Tokugawa era and pre World War II. 「Religious ethics」imply that bushido religiosity in itself—for instance the ceremony of hara-kiri and the discipline of the samurai—was directly associated with the cultivation of Buddhism. Moreover, 「phenomena」 implies that the bushido way of life is in keeping with the tenets of Buddhist discipline; this is reflected, to a great extent, in the daily life of the warriors, for example, in their way of drinking tea or using a sword (sat. or kend.). Therefore, when analyzing the discipline of the warriors, we cannot avoid discussing the relationship between Zen and the warrior. Further, in modern society, bushido has now escalated into a type of nationalism. This is why we explore this relationship. In order to do this, it is necessary to discuss the associations among bushido, Buddhism, Shintoism, and nationalism. This project will focus on bushido in order to investigate its 「religious ethics」and 「phenomena」
