Abstract

The Bauhaus school, during its 14 years of existence, transformed 20th-century design and art education. Through its studies of color, two-dimensional and three-dimensional composition, and material application, it integrated art and craftsmanship, laying the foundation for modernist design theories and practices, and profoundly influencing European design systems. Central to the Bauhaus philosophy was a commitment to functionalism—emphasizing that design should serve its users by prioritizing practicality and the integration of function. It also embraced the characteristics of modernity and industrial production, making it possible for design to move beyond traditional craftsmanship toward standardization and mass production.Furthermore, the Bauhaus aesthetic is symbolized by its unique use of geometric compositions, clean and simple lines, and the application of primary colors. The design principles it advocated—such as"less is more," "form follows function," and "truth to materials"—make its works appear minimal on the surface while embodying deep visual logic. These ideas have proven applicable not only in visual communication fields like graphic, packaging, product, and web design but have also significantly impacted furniture design, spatial planning, and even contemporary digital design. This study employs a case study approach to conduct a cross-era comparison between minimalist-style works from the Bauhaus period and contemporary packaging design. It explores the continuation and evolution of aesthetic concepts from three perspectives: color, line, and material. In an era where sustainability has become a major focus, the Bauhaus emphasis on simplicity and functionality proves especially relevant, providing a solid foundation for sustainable design practices today. Over time, the influence of Bauhaus has extended beyond the fields of art and design, permeating areas such as urban planning and digital media. Particularly in the context of modernization and globalization, the minimalist aesthetics and rational design principles of Bauhaus have become aspirational ideals for many designers and brands. Ultimately, this study translates its findings into practical brand packaging design, using Bauhaus-inspired minimalism as the core concept to create distinctive and recognizable packaging. It is hoped that this research will offer future creators more diverse and innovative design perspectives.
