Abstract

Objectives: According to prior studies, the prevalence of abusing illicit drugs among adolescence has been increasing. Since the phase of adolescence plays an important part in human development, intervention is essential to take precautions against the trend. The purpose of the study was to examine the intention of not abusing illicit drugs among elementary school students. The related TPB variables of not abusing illicit drugs among students of different genders are examined. Method: The study used purposive sampling. 5th and 6th graders were used as participants of study. Structured questionnaires were used as the study tool, and the results were used for statistic analyses. Conclusion: 1. Among TPB variables, the scores of the subjective norm and perceived behavioral control of female were significantly higher than those in male counterparts. 2. The correlations between the variables of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control and the behavioral intention in non-using illicit drugs were all positive. Among all, the subjective norm and perceived behavioral control have the highest correlation. 3. The explanatory power of TPB is 65.3%. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that subjective norm and perceived behavioral control are more significant. Suggestions: It is suggested that illicit-drug-use prevention education among elementary school students be designed based on TPB, incorporating with multi-learning strategies.
