Abstract
It was years ago when my family moved to the North East parts of China, this is a cold and foreign realm far from home. The depressing weather clouded over our heads. The coldness made us feel lonely and secluded from the rest of the world. The feeling continued until one night when it started to snow, for a family coming from the tropical weather of Taiwan, seeing snow falling from the sky was a mind-altering experience. The entire city was covered in silver white snow, it moved us, and also gave us an opportunity to reflect on our future in a calmly manner. Perception decides how people approach their lives, that is when I realized we cannot be beaten down by the gloomy environment, we changed our perspectives, and started appreciating this cold and quiet world. The fog shadowing over our minds faded away, being in such a different environment can also be a great life experience. This is when my artistic seed started to sprout. It was during an exhibition when I saw snow being captured in an amazingly vivid water-ink portrait. It had inspired me to begin my journey in Chinese water-ink painting. “Snow” was almost immediately decided to be my topic of art creation due to my special attachment to it. Snow is not only an expression of emotions, but also a bridge of art creation. People will have different experiences throughout their lives. By shifting the understanding of new environment into motivation, I continued to use snow scenes as my topic of art creation. Reflecting on my inner emotions and feeling, hoping to present the natural beauty of snow, and its unpolished innocence. Turing “snow” into a symbol of self-actualization and production.
