Abstract
This study aims to explore the recreational specialization process of freedivers, from initial exposure to deep involvement, with a focus on their participation motivation, sustained involvement, perceived constraints, and coping strategies. It also examines the integrative changes across cognitive, behavioral, and affective dimensions. Adopting a qualitative approach, six advanced freedivers holding internationally recognized certifications and demonstrating ongoing participation were selected through purposive sampling and interviewed using a semi-structured, in-depth format. The findings reveal a distinct stage-based developmental trajectory consisting of the exploratory phase, the focused phase, and the integrative phase. Throughout these stages, participants exhibited progressive enhancements in behavioral commitment, cognitive understanding, and emotional involvement. These developments were intertwined with the six characteristics of serious leisure, shaping their identity formation and lifestyle. The study recommends that freediving training institutions emphasize motivational and learning support systems, and design professional development pathways to foster long-term engagement and holistic growth among participants.
