Abstract
With the development of the Internet and the availability of digital content, researchers are able to acquire bibliographic information and literary resources from various online databases and network platforms. This study selected CiteULike, an online bibliographic information sharing platform, as the research aim to explore the usage behaviors and network relationships of members of scholarly communities, including how these users apply library management tools to establish and share personal libraries in a virtual environment. Furthermore, the findings obtained in this study can be provided to information institutions for the future promotion of services on related community platforms. This study adopted a qualitative content analysis and a social network analysis, where personal profile and usage behaviors of 200 CiteULike members that have been using the site for one year or more were collected and analyzed. In terms of usage behavior, findings revealed that (1) the most highly disclosed personal profile were user name, job title, and research field. The rates of all other profile were less than 50%. (2) User’s library manifested cross-disciplinary collection of bibliographic information. The subjects of information management, information services, computer science, and digital publishing showing the highest repeatability. (3) Users generally used basic site functions, such as posting bibliographic information into their personal library. In terms of network relationship, findings revealed that (1) The connection density among users and the participation of of overall community features were relatively low. (2) The communication of bibliographic information between user’s library was relatively low, but users manifested cross-disciplinary behaviors to collect bibliographic information, where similar issues in different research fields were aggregated to generate associations. (3) The participation of users in the community features was relatively low and the network structure was loosely. However, bibliographic information of similar issues in different research fields between user’s library could be aggregated by the system’s features. Based on the results of the content analysis and a social network analysis, the contributions of this study can be categorized into two facets. In terms of academic contribution, this study took into account social network concepts to elucidate the exchange and sharing behaviors of members of the scholarly community - CiteULike. These results provide a new perspective for research on bibliographic information sharing systems. In terms of practical contribution, the findings obtained in this study can be provided to information institutions for the future promotion of service on related community platforms.
