Abstract
As the global population ages, the prevalence of cognitive impairment and late-life depression among the elderly is increasing year by year. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of multi-component exercise using exergame on the health for elder. Multi-component exercise programs are believed to improve functional fitness and executive function of the elder, while exergame with technologyare believed to increase the willingness to participate and positive emotions through technological feedback, effectively enhancing well-being for elder. In this research, the multi-component exercise program using exergame was designed. A quasi-experimental design was employed with the training method as the independent variable. The experimental group received exergame, while the control group received traditional physical education. Measures of executive function, functional fitness, and well-being were the dependent variables. The study participants consist of 61 elders from the senior education institutions in Taipei. The results of the research indicate that multi-component exercise using exergame can partially improve the executive function, functional fitness, and well-being of older adults. Based on the findings, the study suggests the following recommendations: (1) Considering the significant individual differences among elder, it is advisable to choose adaptive exergame that allow individuals at different levels of ability to engage in training at corresponding intensities. (2) Since older adults may have difficulties in learning to operate exergame solely by watching instructional screens, it is important for instructors to break down the steps and provide demonstrations to help elder understand and follow the instructions.
