Abstract

Tyzen Hsiao (1938-2015) is not only a pianist and educator but also a great musician. Demonstrating exceptional musical talent from a young age, he pursued studies in Japan and the United States, blending Eastern and Western music traditions to create boundary-breaking compositions. His music spread worldwide, reflecting his deep love for his homeland, Taiwan.Fearlessly employing Western classical music techniques, he infused them into Taiwanese folk melodies, crafting unprecedented musical works that earned him the moniker"Taiwan's Rachmaninoff." This thesis comprises five chapters. The introduction, Chapter One, outlines the research motivation, methods, and scope. Chapter Two delves into Tyzen Hsiao's life background and the evolution of his stylistic influences amidst the contemporary environment. Chapter Three conducts a formal analysis of "Memories of Homeland, Op. 49," subdivided into six sections: Prelude, Memory, Playground, Ancient Taiwanese Melody, Elegy, and Frolic. Each piece articulates distinct emotional states through unique compositional techniques. Chapter Four explores musical interpretation, dissected into six subsections, discussing areas of analysis and practice that warrant attention, offering suggestions for interpretation, and explaining musical terminologies and performance techniques. Finally, Chapter Five provides conclusions, summarizing the thesis and discussing the significance of the analyzed composition within the realm of Taiwanese music. The author shares their thoughts and anticipates engaging readers in exploring"Memories of Homeland" together, aiming to deepen understanding not only of Taiwanese composers and classical piano works but also of Taiwan's musical heritage and its unique development.
