Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of solution-focused brief counseling training on improving the counseling self-efficacy among crisis hotline volunteers. Pre-test post-test experimental design was adopted. Participants of the current study were active volunteers from the Taipei Lifeline Association. Those who were willing to continue their hotline services were invited to participate in a full course of SFBC training program. Twenty nine volunteers, who were recruited in the formal study, were randomly assigned to the treatment group and the control groups. The study included fourteen people in the experimental group, and fifteen in the control group. Only the treatment group received a three-day (24 hours in total) training program on SFBC. The Counseling Self-efficacy Scale and the SFBC Evaluation Scale were distributed before, after, and one month after the SFBC training program. All participants were required to complete the pretest, post-test and follow-up tests. Data were analyzed using SPSS and Mann-Whitney U test. Participants from the experimental group were invited to fill up another evaluation sheet on how their counseling self-efficacy was influenced by the SFBC training program they received. Qualitative analysis was used to analyze verbal data from the evaluation sheet. The main findings of the current study include: 1.Regarding the Counseling Self-efficacy Scale, significant differences were found between the treatment group and the control group on change scores between the post-test and the pretest, as well as between the follow-up test and the pretest. 2.Regarding the SFBC Evaluation Scale, significant differences were found between the treatment group and the control group on change scores between the post-test and the pretest, as well as between the follow-up test and the pretest. 3.Four program features that contributed to volunteers’ counseling self-efficacy enhancement were found: “SFBC skills”, “SFBC interview framework”, “basic beliefs and attitudes for SFBC human service providers”, and “SFBC training as a booster for hotline volunteers’ confidence and performance stability in services”. Based on the research results, suggestions were provided to hotline volunteers, counseling practitioners, and researchers for further studies in relevant fields.
