Abstract

This research aimed to explore the influence of participation in scout troop activities on junior high school students' interpersonal relationships. A single-group pretest-posttest design was adopted, with 32 students from a Scout troop in a junior high school in Taipei City as participants. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted to gain in-depth insights into the students' perspectives. The results indicated a marginally significant positive change in the interpersonal interaction dimension (p=.074) and a significant decrease in the interpersonal distress dimension (p=.045) after participating in scouttroop activities. However, no significant changes were observed in the interpersonal support, cognition, or needs dimensions. Grade level showed a significant influence, with eighth-grade students demonstrating positive changes with large effect sizes across most interpersonal dimensions, while seventh-grade students generally showed decreases or no significant changes. Gender differences were not statistically significant. The comprehensive analysis indicates that the impact of scout troop activities on interpersonal relationships is closely related to students’ duration of participation, roles assumed, and the characteristics of the activity design. This research suggests that future scouting troop activities should adjust their level of difficulty and support systems according to different age stages and strengthen reflective practices and supportive interactions to more effectively enhance students’ interpersonal development.
