Abstract
Despite the education expansion, gender segregation in subject fields is still common. Most studies focus on changes in the education structure, for example, the proportion of female participation in education, while few explore the factors behind students’ choices of major. The purpose of this study is to understand the effects of gender role and math/science achievement on students’ choices of major. The data analyzed here is from Taiwan Youth Project (YTP). The structural equation modeling is used to test the hypotheses, and the main findings are as follows. 1.Math/ science achievement, rather than gender role, acts as a key factor affecting teenage students’choice of major. 2.Family backgrounds and math/ science achievement have influences on female students’ choice of major. 3.Math/ science achievement has influence on male students’ choice of major. 4.Math/ science achievement is the key factor in students’ choice of major, though, it does not reach a mediate effect. In the last chapter are some suggestions for future studies in term of methodology.
