Abstract
This thesis explores Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F for Military Band, Op. 28, No. 2, from three perspectives: historical context, musical analysis, and conducting interpretation. The author’s initial exposure to the work during service in the Republic of China Navy Band sparked this research. As a staple in wind band repertoire, the suite is both musically demanding and culturally resonant, reflecting English national identity and early 20th-century trends. The compositional background is examined within the context of the English folk-song revival and Holst’s relationship with Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958). Several traditional folk melodies are integrated into the suite, demonstrating Holst’s alignment with nationalistic ideals and folk traditions.Musical analysis addresses formal structure, orchestration, thematic development, tonality, and harmony across all four movements. Conducting strategies are developed through comparisons of recordings and rehearsal experience, focusing on tempo control, instrumental balance, and expressive transitions. Emphasis is placed on understanding the emotional and cultural character of the folk material to enrich performance depth. This research aims to bridge theory and practice, offering practical insights for conductors and performers. Future inquiries might explore Holst’s other works or expand into studies of English musical nationalism in the early 1900s.
