zh_TW
This thesis endeavors to investigate Mandarin Phonetic Symbols as a tradition invented by the Republic of China, and how such a phonetic system has been deployed as a tool to facilitate modern national education and Chinese traditional culture. During the postwar period, the state apparatuses of the Republic of China/Kuomintang has imposed Mandarin Phonetic Symbols on Taiwan’s society. As a form of cultural hegemony, this phonetic system has been articulated as part of the discursive formation of Chinese language education. However, after the lifting of martial law, the development of Taiwan’s civic society, the emergence of consumer culture, and the proliferation of internet technology, Mandarin Phonetic Symbols has been rendered as a game of internet slangs, which has further distinguished Sinophone writings in Taiwan from its counterparts. This thesis points out that the process of transforming Mandarin Phonetic Symbols from an element of Chinese traditional culture into a kind of internet sub-culture indicates a peculiar construction of Taiwanese identity within the cyber space. This thesis takes Eric Hobsbawm’s analytic framework in The Invention of Tradition as the main research strategy to explore the transformative traces of Mandarin Phonetic Symbols from national tradition to popular culture, from national ethos to parodic games, from the representation of China to the practice of everyday life in Taiwan. First, this thesis argues that the Republic of China has taken Mandarin Phonetic Symbols to build the foundation of modern national education and Chinese traditional culture. This thesis teases out historical meanings of such an invention by discussing the process of how Mandarin Phonetic Symbols was invented in a nation-state. Second, this thesis analyzes how the discursive formation of National Language Movement initiated by the Republic of China in Taiwan has been connected with relevant social sectors, cultural conceptions, and governmental policies, through which Mandarin Phonetic Symbols has established itself as a form of cultural hegemony. Lastly, after the lifting of martial law, the development of Taiwan’s civic society, the emergence of consumer culture, and the wide spread application of Mandarin Phonetic Symbols in the cyber space, we have witnessed an era in which Mandarin Phonetic Symbols became a substitution of Chinese characters in the use of internet slangs. Such a phenomenon distinguishes the Sinophone inscriptions in Taiwan from Sinophone practitioners in other countries. Overall, this thesis aims to explain the genealogies of how Mandarin Phonetic Symbols has been transformed from an essential element of Chinese traditional culture into a specific kind of register of Taiwanese identification in the cyber space.en_US
