Abstract
An athlete's performance on the court is influenced by many factors such as the opponent's state, field condition, environment, etc. Therefore, an important training issue is to improve the player's anticipation capability, i.e., the ability to quickly analyze the opponent's movement and make a correct decision rapidly. From the current related research, we found that there are some defects and conflicts in visual search methods and other related anticipation capability studies. Hence, we develop a computer system by integrating motor skill, multimedia processing and web-based computing to assess player's anticipation capability. In this study, we use badminton players as an example for the system. It is proved that, by watching the opponent's movement and birdie trajectory on the screen, the players can improve their ability in predicting the birdie's location. The system is developed using Microsoft language Visual C# and SQL Server 2000 database management system. It also records the player's profile, which includes the correctness ratio and response time. The profile can then be stored for further analysis. The system, tested by computer experts, badminton players and coaches, is proved to be useful not only for evaluating players' anticipation capability, but also for improving their skills when training with the system.
