Lawrence, as a means of rebellion against the class division of his time. Drawing on Lawrence’s views on language and class, it is hereby argued that Mellors’ use of dialect is a deliberate attempt to subvert the dominant language norms and assert his identity as a working-class member. Through close analysis of Mellors’ speech, this thesis demonstrates the way his dialect reflects not only his social background but also his personal beliefs and desires. Besides, this thesis also explores how Mellors’ dialect is received by other characters in the novel, particularly Lady Chatterley, and how this reception reflects broader attitudes towards language and class in early 20th-century England. Ultimately, the complexities of social class are also explored, and Mellors’ dialect is proven to be a powerful tool for resistance and self-expression.
