Abstract

The rise of social networking has accelerated the development of interpersonal relationships within the cyber strata. Social networks are more than just a platform for making friends. It enables those who share common interests to connect and communication through the Internet. Online communication requires the addition of a variety of tools to convey emotions in a non-verbal setting. This study utilized an emotion classification system designed by Lazarus (1999) and Lin (2003). An analysis of emotional expression statements was developed through the collection of a total of 400 Facebook status posts that were categorized by positive and negative, with half being male and the other half female. The conclusion derived from the Facebook contexts were separated into four strategies: direct statement, pragmatic strategy, symbol assisted, and complement strategy. Statistics were then gathered in regards to differences between emotional expression strategy by native Chinese and English speakers, as well as gender. The results show that both native Chinese and English speakers express positive and negative emotions in direct statements. Native Chinese speakers have a tendency to use code-mixing and metaphors more than native English speakers. In addition, symbols are also more prevalent with native Chinese speakers in both negative and positive contexts. Native Chinese and English speakers use parentheses strategy in different ways. Native Chinese speakers use this method as a way to provide further background information. Native English speakers however use it as a simple supplement for providing additional information.
