Abstract

With increasing exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and Vietnam, Taiwan has become increasingly attractive for Vietnamese students seeking to study Mandarin due to its unique economic and cultural significance. This research aims to investigate the language learning and cultural adaptation of Vietnamese students in Taiwan. Employing qualitative research methods including content analysis, in-depth interviews, and observations, the study focuses on the language learning processes, cultural challenges, and adaptation strategies of Vietnamese students pursuing undergraduate degrees in Taiwan, with their duration of stay ranging from 1 to 5 years. The specific objectives are: 1. Analyzing the language learning journey of Vietnamese students in Taiwan; 2. Exploring their cultural adaptation experiences; 3. Proposing relevant policies and educational recommendations. The research findings indicate that language barriers and cultural differences are the primary factors influencing students' adaptation. Additionally, individual factors such as personal motives for coming to Taiwan also significantly affect their adaptation process. The specific findings include: 1. Motivation for coming to Taiwan: similar tones, having friends and family in Taiwan, Taiwan being a multicultural country, a safe and comfortable environment, employment opportunities, and following the advice of parents and friends. 2. Language barriers: insufficient vocabulary, fast speech, difficulty of classroom content, lack of language practice environment, and lack of self-confidence.3. Cultural differences: Vietnamese students in Taiwan face various cultural adaptation issues, including discrimination, food, transportation, festivals, and climate. The time required to adapt to these issues varies from person to person. Finally, based on the research findings, this study proposes several educational policies and learning method recommendations to facilitate the learning and living adaptation of Vietnamese students in Taiwan.
