Abstract
Nearly 30% of species in Taiwan are considered endemic or subspecies; however, due to habitat destruction, overhunting, environmental pollution, increased vehicle traffic, invasion of exotic species, and other factors, a number of wild species are facing extinction. A total of 225 animal species in Taiwan are included on the conservation list. If conservation is not actively promoted and strengthened, these animals may disappear from the wild in Taiwan forever. Thus, this research focuses on endangered animals in Taiwan and utilizes the visual style of traditional temple paintings to create a series of posters. This method integrates both the everyday and the sacred from traditional beliefs into creative themes to deify the endangered animals. This visual deification conveys the value of the disappearance and conservation of life and explores the possibility of passing down and innovating traditional paintings. The literature review integrates the discourses of traditional temple painting culture, biodiversity, and poster design and establishes the foundation of the subsequent creation of the theme. In the case analysis, the'' Taiwan International Student Design Competition" is used as a sampling source to classify visual expression methods and analyze the technique, shape, and form of the award-winning works related to environmental issues. In the practical stage, 14 selected endangered animals in Taiwan were classified into five categories based on crisis factors: increased vehicle traffic, poaching, over-exploitation, habitat destruction, and foreign invasion. There were a total of five sets of posters in the Taiwanese traditional painting style. The following conclusions can be made: First, in the field of visual communication, traditional culture and artistic expression can better demonstrate the difference and uniqueness of personal background and visual style. Second, the similar concepts of passing down traditional culture and survival of endangered animals can evoke visual memories and deepen sense of identity. Finally, animal conservation and the implementation of related policies still need to be promoted, emphasizing the impact this issue has on ecology and people.
