Abstract

This study draws on trauma theory and memory studies to explore the interplay between storytelling, memory, and historical rupture in Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See (2014), to discover how the narrative revises traditional war narratives by writing through the fractured interiority of his characters. Rather than focusing on heroism or redemptive suffering, it lays bare how war shapes individuals through systemic violence, reaching into every corner of ordinary life. Not just viewing All the Light We Cannot See as a postmodern narrative and trauma text, this thesis aims to present the irreparable fractures of wartime as well asaftermath. Through multiple perspectives, non-linear narrative, and concise yet articulate portrayal, all elements converge to reveal the layer of postmodernism and fragmented storytelling. This thesis analyzes three different aspects of the fragmented experiences caused by war in the novel, revealing how historical traumas are borne by Tom, Dick, and Harry in a seemingly every day narrative style. The second section reveals how fragmented narratives reflect broken memories and moral silence within the social system. The third section discusses fragmented selves, analyzing how characters in the novel confront reality and moral dilemmas, yet remain trapped by war, unable to fully recognize what they have endured. The fourth section attempts to piece together these “truths” of the past through fragmented historical events and experiences. What is presented publicly isn't absolutely true, and memory does not exist solely within a coherent narrative; instead, truths are like scattered fragments, spread across historical events and within the minds of those who become witnesses.
