This paper is proposed to analyze the meanings and functions of the Chinese particle “le” with image-schema analysis in cognitive perspective. The cognitive linguistics thought the language form is the result of conceptualization. By way of the dynamic concept, we can shape our categorization. With the meanings of “finished” or “completed”, “le” can be metonymically and metaphorically related to two initial mental images and their implications in different cognitive and communication domains: the retrospective image of a finished process and the prospective image of an available process. Finally, we discuss this Chinese particle “le”, though showed its polysemy in cognitive factors, has an original meaning, We have the following suggestions for second language learning in Chinese:teaching “le”in a specific model teaching, “le” with the image-schema strategies, and emphasizing the metaphorical meaning of “le”.
