Abstract

The purposes of this study were to examine merits and defects of the currently adopted entrance examination system of senior high and vocational schools in Taiwan Province, and to work out ways for improving the procedures and related measures. The literature review was used to examine the current status of the entrance examination of senior high and vocational schools in Taiwan Province and to cite scholars' propositions on how to improve the procedures. The comparative study was made to explore the current procedures for entrance to senior high and vocational schools in such countries as the United States of America, England, France, West Germany, Japan, Korea, and Singapore. The questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the public opinions concerning improvement of the procedures. The main findings of the study were as follows: 1. The current entrance examination system and procedures of senior high and vocational schools should be modified to be more effective in selection of students suitable for further education. 2. The senior high schools and the vocational schools in each county of city area should establish a joint examination committee to take charge of official functions including construction of tests, arrangement of examination, scoring ,and distribution of students. 3. A set of well-designed tests, constructed by a joint committee which consists of subject specialists, professors , and senior teachers should be used as screening instruments for the entrance examination of senior high and vocational schools. 4. The application system is recommended. Only those students who meet the minimum criteria are eligible to apply for admission. Selection and admission are based on the applicants' scholastic records of junior high schools, the scores of the provincial graduation examination, and the results of aptitude tests.
