Abstract

The research investigated the centers of art and culture (also referred to as art centers) located at Taiwan’s universities which had the capacities to archive artworks. It aimed at exploring the contexts of artwork archiving in these centers in accordance with relationships among the featured collections, the management mechanism as well as artists’ willingness of donating their artworks. Moreover, in this research, the National Chung Hsing University Art Center was a case in point and the methods for data collection applied herein included literature analysis, questionnaire as well as interview. The empirical data collected served as the basis of analysis and discussion, which was conductive to understanding the actual condition of artwork collection in these centers as well as the significant impacts the collection management strategies exerting on these centers, thereby providing art collection operators with practical reference and assisting them in achieving the goal of sustainable development. The questionnaires were summarized and designed by referring to historical literature, qualitative interviews, and variables reviewed by experts, and then the participants were selected accordingly. The questionnaires were prepared by simplifying the complex artwork archiving process. As such, the results from the questionnaires were divided into only two groups, i.e. the artwork receivers’ and the givers’. The SPSS statistical software was used to do the descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis. According to the results, the collection sources and the preference of the person in charge had significantly positive influences on collection management strategies; the collection management strategies had significantly positive influences on art collections in the art centers; the collection sources and the preference of the person in charge had significantly positive influences on the artworks collected in the art centers. In the end, the following conclusions were put forward based on the literature, questionnaire results and interview contents to provide reference for university art centers and future research in terms of collection management. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the identity and background had different effects on collected artworks in the art centers. For example, artists paid most attention to “space facilities” and “management mechanism”; (2) “collection management strategies” had significant influences on the artworks collected in the art centers and the greater importance the art centers attached to “collection management strategies,” the higher artists’ trust would be, which would bolster artists’ willingness to donate artworks and, as such, also augment the number of artworks donated; (3) Promotion venues and tools such as exhibition, creative production, and digital archiving could help foster the application of the artwork collections, which was profoundly meaningful in vivifying the art centers, locations conventionally considered to belong to only very few art lovers. Suggestions for future researches include: the successive researches can focus on the opinions and views of students, teachers or audiences who have visited the art centers. Their opinions and views can supplement the omissions of quantitative researches.
