Abstract

The major purpose of this study was to investigate issues regarding environment management, planning, and design for senior high school swimming pools in Taiwan. This study included three primary areas: 1. Explore current planning and design at high school swimming pools and their adjacent facilities; 2. Discuss environment management at high school swimming pools and their adjacent facilities; 3. Provide suggestions to planners, architects, and operators of pools for swimming pool management and planning . Target subjects used in this research study were ninety-two senior high schools in Taiwan, which have swimming pool at their school. The questionnaire, as an instrument of this study, was “The Investigation of Environment Management, Planning, and Design for Senior High School Swimming Pools in Taiwan.” Based on descriptive analysis, the findings of this study are summarized as follows: 1. 19.3%, 33.3% and 19.8% of pool deck areas, shower rooms, and toilet facilities respectively did not construct properly for nonslip nature. This finding indicates some schools did not consider safety issue when planning and designing swimming pools and their adjacent facilities. Schools have responsibility to provide safe learning environment to students, as a result, safty issue should be foscused for swimming pool management. 2. 26.3%, 21.1%, and 22.8% of schools did not have planning for sanitary area at their pool deck areas, shower rooms, and toilet facilities respectively. However, in order to meet hygienic standard, schools need to establish extra budget to purchase sanitary equipment and to hire more staffs. Furthermore, purchasing additional equipment indicates the need of more storage spaces, which might be extra burden for schools in terms of budget and personnel. 3. In the area of equipment management, 43.1% of schools have no swimming pool lane ropes, 37.7% have no underwater vacuum system, 14.0% have no chemical treatment of water, and 33.3% have no storage room for cleaning equipment. As a result, many objectives were placed around the pool deck, which ruins the appearance of swimming pool and increases the possibility for students to get injury in the swimming pool.
