T.Item Design of employee training in Taiwanese nonprofits.(2013-09-10) Chang, W. W.; Huang, C. M.; Kuo, Y-C.Workforce learning has become a fundamental need for organizations that face a quick-changing world growing more complicated by the day. In this study, we focused on an examination into the factors that affect the design of employee training in nonprofits, including a discussion into the training practices of nonprofits as a result of those factors. Smaller nonprofits in Taiwan were studied; larger nonprofits, such as the Red Cross and World Vision, were not included in the present study. Through interviews with and surveys of 20 participating nonprofits in Taiwan, we found that the widely used linear training design framework, including assessment, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, might not be appropriate for many nonprofits due to organizational factors such as human resources, financial environments, and managerial systems. Due to the influence of these factors, the practice of training in nonprofits has moved beyond structured design, and diverse on-the-job approaches are now being applied.Item Overseas adaptation: Foreigner volunteering and sense of community(2011-07-28) Wang, C.; Chang, W. W.; Kuo,Y.C.Non-profit organizations (NPOs) play important roles in society as they provide services for diverse populations. However, when their functions become critical, the discussion regarding workplace training in NPOs is limited. Most of discussions in the existing training literature focus on business sectors. To help bring this gap, this study systematically examined the characteristics of NPOs and discussed the factors that influence NPO workplace training design. Through literature review, questionnaire, and interview, this study identified factors in four aspects, including human structure, managerial system, financial environment, and the climate of learning. This study found that the training design model used in business sectors might not appropriate in NPOs due to their different organizational characteristics. Based on the finding, this study suggested that NPOs should use the flexibility of on-the-job training in individual and group level and apply appropriate training design framework.
