Abstract

Nowadays, although there are diverse types of web design methods and software nowadays, it is still difficult for those users whom have no experience in web design to set the color in harmony on a web page. In this study, we propose an automatic method for color scheme in web design. The method can be summarized as follows: Firstly, the main color of web page is chosen from several photographs, then the auxiliary color and ornamented color are selected out based on color harmonic theory. Secondly, the legibility of text is adjusted according to the result of color scheme. Finally, the color combinations are presented into the layout of website. Participants whom have no experience in design were chosen for evaluating the satisfaction and effectiveness to this method by using questionnaires. Web pages our method produced were and also evaluated by four professional designers. Most participants thought they could save time by using this method while doing color scheme, and they felt satisfied with the result. To professional designers, although the color combinations were short of sense of multi-level, it’s still filled with harmony. The experimental results show that this automatic website color scheme method can meet the needs of users whom has no experience in web design, but there is still more room for improvement in visual effects for professional web design.
