Drawing on uses and gratifications theory, reception analysis, and feminist and queer theories, the study examined the viewing contexts and interpretive practices of Taiwanese BL fandom, analyzed how BL dramas contributed to the cultivation of gender consciousness, and compared similarities and differences among BL fans with diverse characteristics. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with participants of varied genders and sexual orientations, conducted from autumn 2024 to summer 2025. The findings indicated that BL fandom’s viewing experiences manifested transnational characteristics, with the internet serving as a central arena for resource circulation and fan interaction. Veteran fans often possessed prior engagement with BL texts within ACGN, while some non-heterosexual fans connected their viewing experiences to homosexuality-themed dramas. Beyond the dramas themselves, male celebrities’ queerbaiting strategies emerged as significant draws, and fans placed considerable value on actors’ endorsement interactions, regarding these as crucial mechanisms for sustaining emotional investment in BL pairings. Moreover, BL fans generally perceived BL dramas as an idealized model of romantic relationships, with erotic scenes interpreted as symbols of true love. BL dramas functioned as a site for practicing and exploring gender transgression. Through viewing, fans developed varying degrees of gender consciousness, evidenced by heightened attention to gay male communities and broader gender issues, as well as moral reflections on actors’ behaviour. However, limitations persisted in terms of viewing perspectives and interpretive frameworks. In comparing different gender groups, fujoshi often pursued sexual / gender liberation through erotic narratives, while fudanshi tended to employ BL dramas as tools for cultivating a “progressive masculine” image, thereby reinforcing power hierarchies within male communities. The two also differed in their imaginaries of gendered embodiment, with fujoshi showing greater acceptance of feminine traits. Nevertheless, both groups frequently interpreted BL narratives through a heteronormative lens, reframing male–male romantic storylines within heterosexual romance logics. Regarding different sexual orientations, non-heterosexual fans often engaged with BL dramas in response to coming out pressures or identity struggles, whereas heterosexual fans tended to engage more relaxed. Across orientations, those who experienced character identification generally preferred to identify with the"top" role, suggesting the persistent influence of prevailing gender norms. In sum, the transnational circulation and pluralistic interpretations of BL dramas afforded Taiwanese BL fandom opportunities to negotiate and enact gender transgression, yet these practices were accompanied by notable complexities and limitations. The study concludes with recommendations for BL drama producers, educators, and fan communities.臺灣腐眾BL劇接收分析性別意識Taiwanese BL FandomBL DramasReception AnalysisGender Consciousness跨境、越界的性別想像:臺灣腐眾對BL劇的接收分析與性別意識研究Transnational and Transgressive Gender Imaginations: An Analysis of the Taiwanese BL Fandom's Reception of BL Dramas and Their Gender Consciousness學術論文
