Scholars from both Chinese and Western traditions have extensively studied the novel’s weaving and clothing, feasts and culinary arts, character portrayals, garden architecture, poetry, and flora, all of which collectively reflect traditional aesthetic values and the essence of classical art. This thesis explores Cao Xueqin’s use of flowers as metaphors for the character and fate of the women in the novel, as well as their status under the constraints of feudal etiquette. Through ink-and-color painting, this thesis seeks to depict the inner barriers and restraints faced by these women. By presenting the vivid and diverse imagery of blooming flowers in Dream of the Red Mansions, the thesis expresses aspirations for happiness and offers a visual interpretation of the novel’s rich and profound themes. This thesis is divided into five main parts: Chapter One, the Introduction, outlines the research motivation and objectives, scope, methodology, and definitions of terms. Chapter Two discusses the theoretical foundations, examining the status of women and their self-awareness under the feudal rites of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It explores the metaphor of"Flowers as Metaphors for People," analyzing significant flowers and their related meanings. This chapter also provides an in-depth analysis of the integration of ink and color in modern figure and flower painting, examining the interplay between meticulous outline drawing and heavy color painting, as well as the expression of spirit. It also covers the interaction of a myriad of blossoms with Chinese gouache, along with an analysis of relevant artists' works and the garden art of the Grand ViewGarden. Chapter Three focuses on creative concepts and practices. Chapter Four presents a personal analysis of creative works, highlighting three series:"Flowers as Metaphors for People: The Mists of the Red Chamber," "A Thousand Blossoms: Shadows of Flowers," and "Cherished Happiness: Romantic Sentiments," with an in-depth discussion of creative thought, content, and techniques. Chapter Five concludes with reflections on insights gained through this research and prospects for future creations.拾花入夢以花喻人女性自覺特殊技法Gather flowers and enter into dreamsFlowers as Metaphors for PeopleFemale consciousnessSpecial Techniques拾花入夢-顏麗琴彩墨創作論述Gather flowers into dreams –Yan, Lih-Chyn Discussion on Color Ink Paintings Art Creation學術論文
