His early piano pieces, very charming, have won him fame but posited him as a “salon composer.” This historical judgement – Fauré as a salon composer – has remained intact into the twentieth-first century. According to two most prominent Fauré scholars – Jean-Michel Nectoux and Robert Orledge, Fauré’s style underwent radical change during the period from 1900 to 1905. That is, piano works composed after 1906 very likely exhibit “late style,” or certain features of “late style.” These compositions consist of a third of Fauré’s output of piano works. This thesis takes Fauré’s piano works in third period as its subject, including Barcarolle No. 8 to 13, Nocturne No. 9 to 13, Impromtu No. 5, and Nine Préludes. After constructing the historical context of French music and French piano music from 1850 to 1925, and briefly reviewing Fauré’s biography and early pianoworks, this study first analyzes the musical structure and stylistic characteristics of each piece, and attempts to generalize and summarize Fauré’s third-period piano works from the following aspects: tonality and harmony, melody, rhythm and meter, texture.佛瑞法國鋼琴音樂晚期風格船歌夜曲前奏曲Gabriel FauréFrench piano musiclate stylebarcarollenocturneprélude佛瑞晚期鋼琴作品研究A Study of Fauré’s Late Piano Works
