Abstract

“Austronesian Music Museum II- Digital Archive Project on Orchid Island and the outer islands of Palau(Belau) ” will base on “The Beauty of Indigenous Music I, II” and “The Beauty of Austronesian Music-Digital Archvie Project of Palau(Belau) Music”, establishing a fine Austronesian Music Museum. The project will have two phases, including the Digitization on folk songs of Orchid Island and the music of the outer islands of Palau(Belau). The purposes of this project are to digitize and establish metadata of the fieldwork material of Mr. Guo-Shen Hong, Professor Shan-Hua Chien, and Professor Osamu Yamaguti. Mr. Hong provides 1 cassette recording of children songs of Yami(Tao) people, containing 57 unpublished numbers. Professor Chien provides 5 cassette tapes of Yami(Tao) traditional songs recorded by him during 1976-1977. Furthermore, there are 26 open reel tapes and 29 8mm silent films of traditional music and dance of Palau(Belau) and outer islands to be synchronized, collecting by Prof. Yamaguti in 1965-1966. This project involves the international issues of the authority of law, as well as the copyrights. In order to promote and apply the outputs for the music digital archives project, this project will invite scholars to discuss and seek the possible solutions on these topics. The researches on Austronesian culture, especially in music, still need to be explored and have a long way to go. In addition, the documents of Palau(Belau) music in 1960’s has been destroyed during the fire. Due to the unique and valuable of the documents of this project, the director of Belau National Museum has expressed her willingness and expectation on this project, and is looking forwards to promoting international cooperation towards musical activities on Austronesian music eventually.
