Abstract

For the past decade, science education research has not only gained much attention from educators throughout the world but also encouraged growing numbers of researchers and academic journals to devote into this field. In light of assisting researchers to shape their own journal reading and publication scheme, it seems appropriate to assess and rank the relative quality of science/math education-related journals in Taiwan. In thispaper, we provide information on the characteristics of editorial operation and manuscript review process of science educationrelated journals as well as a journal rankings result using both a subjective (survey) and an objective (citation) approach. Three subjective indicators including expert judgment, paper submission preferences, and reading preferences revealed by researchers, and an objective indicator on the total citations of a journal were employed to evaluate and rank science education journals. A composite indicator was then established by incorporating the above four indicators to appraise the overall impacts of different science education journals. The results indicated that the Chinese Journal of Science Education, Proceedings of the National Science Council Part D: Science Education, Journal of National Taiwan Normal University: Mathematics & Science Education, and Science Education Monthly are consistently ranked highly irrespective of which indicators used. The rankings provide the research community with a better understanding of which science education publication outlets are the most influential in our field and also make an objective analysis of journal quality available to academic departments or institutes for assessment of faculty performance. It is noted, however, that the objective of this paper was to assess the relative impacts and quality of journals in the field of science education; for that reason, the results of the current study should not be generalized to other educational research fields.
