Abstract
This study investigate how lab-based instruction influence senior high school students when learning Image Processing theories. A quasi-experiment was conducted in order to test the lab-based instructional approach. Four classes of 143 senior high school students served as the subjects for this study. Two classes of students were assigned to experiment group (using Image Processing Lab software), the other two classes of students were assigned to control group (not using Image Processing Lab Software). A posttest was administered to compare students’ performance in the two groups. The statistical procedure of ANCOVA was employed to analyze students performance. The final grades of a previous Computer course was used to equate the variance caused by students’ prior knowledge in the statistical analysis. A questionnaire was conducted to collect students’ comments about the lab-based activities. Five important findings of this study are: (1) lab-based instruction is effective in learning of basic image processing techniques; (2) students had a stereo-typed impression that studying of image processing is to study manipulation of image processing software; (3)Students agreed that lab-based instruction helped them understand the theory and techniques better and that it enhances their learning enthusiasms ; (4) The lab-based image processing package so developed is a good learning aid; (5) Students find that the “mask” operation concept is the most difficult to grasp.
