Abstract
Chinese information retrieval systems grow mushrooming in the resent years. To uncover the use and the users of these systems is vital for better system design and for the promotion of future use. This paper reports an exploratory research on the use and the users of four selective Chinese databases as well as Internet use. Methodology includes questionnaires, observation and in-depth interview. The results reveal that the average usability is 50%; overall satisfaction being 60%; satisfactory system interaction being 65%; satisfaction on system operation and response time of the four databases between 70% and 80%, with 83.4%, the highest for Internet searching. Limited access points are used by the most users. In addition, five models are identified to represent the relationship between user's search requests and search queries, namely, the straightforward model, the abundant terms model, the limited terms model, the broad to the specific concepts model, and the specific to the generic concepts model. It is also found that the model bears statistical significance with the individual database.
