Abstract
Reading is an important component in second language teaching and learning. Many English teachers of L1 and L2 have developed their own theories of how reading should be taught and have conducted their own reading-related research. However, just as the approaches teachers have adopted to reading instruction might be different, the methods used to conduct research might also vary. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of current EFL reading research in Taiwan and point out directions for future research. Papers published in the proceedings of two major TEFL conferences in Taiwan were surveyed. Also surveyed were a research-oriented journal, English Teaching & Learning (ETL) and MA and PhD theses. These sources were analyzed to examine the topics, the research paradigms, and the participants studied. The results showed that the majority of these studies employed a quantitative approach to collect data and the most commonly explored topic concerned instructional issues. Also, most studies recruited participants via convenience sampling. It is suggested that future reading research explore a broader spectrum of topics and adopt more in-depth qualitative inquiries.
