Traveling implicates spatial movement, and travel writings represents the affiliation between the writers and the background of their traveling regarding time and space. Researches on travel writings in Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Rule encompass various concepts, including representations of customs, memory and affirmation, psychological interactions between the Imperial and the colonized, driftiness and diaspora. The scope of researches is interdisciplinary and full of possibility for future expansions. Travel writings are related to observations on cultural differences and discourses on related themes through movement across time and space. They are also worthy of further researches due to the nature of being the media of propagating knowledge to the intellectual via publications. Databases provide abundant materials for researches on travel literature, and they also serve as a convenient tool on the discovery of new issues and facilitation of a more in-depth exploration on cultures. For researchers in humanities, databases also afford broader and newer scopes into interdisciplinary studies. The methodology of this paper includes the following two trajectories. The first is to cross-reference the spatial data and the text concerning space in the literary works, and the second is to create a spatial info-system within travel writings. The application of information system in comparative literature will elucidate the evolutionary course of settlements or geographical transformations in Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Rule. The results can be utilized to compare with the narratives in travel writings and in turns represent the meaning of the geographical contexts. As for the open-sourced GIS, it provides researchers in Humanities an alternative route into textual analysis in order to find external relations between the texts and its background, which then yields constructive comparisons between the two. The construction of LGIS (Literary Geographic Information System) and its applications will have substantial influences on the researches in travel writings.
