Abstract: 自 90 年代起,行動通信就快速蓬勃的發展,全球人口擁有手機的比例已相當高,因此 造就了廣大的手機市場。而快速蓬勃發展的市場更加速行動通信標準及服務的發展, 由最早的類比行動通信進化到2G 的GSM 及CDMA,2.5G 的GPRS,2.75G 的EDGE,3G 的 WCDMA。由於行動通信網路的部署相當耗時且需要龐大的資金,不可能一下子就將前一 代的行動通信設施都更新,因此即使是同一國家都有不同的行動通信標準並存。自從 2G 的GSM 就可提供漫遊的行動通信服務,從一個地區漫遊到另一個地區,手機所需支 援的行動通信標準就更多了。為了支援多重行動通信標準,手機的射頻發射機是主要 的技術瓶頸,尤其是功率放大器,不但要符合動通信標準線性度的規範,而且要有高 效率。以目前的技術,若要同時支援四頻2G 到3G 的行動通信標準,必需使用7 顆不 同的射頻功率放大器。本計畫在於發展一個高效率且可支援多種2G 及3G 行動通信標 準的高整合度射頻功率放大器,因為要同時滿足射頻功率放大器的線性度及效率的要 求,此射頻功率放大器會以極座標發射機的架構來實現,以簡化3G 手機射頻系統的 整合,將7 顆射頻功率放大器大幅縮減到1~2 顆,且經由極座標發射機的架構,使用 高效率的切換式功率放大器來保持整體發射機的效率,並利用信號調變的方式,來維 持功率信號的線性度。
Since 90’s, mobile communications have been developed rapidly. The market of cellular phones soars up and it stimulates the mobile communication industry to speed up the development of next generation system for new services. The deployment of cellular networks is costly and time consuming. Therefore, many generations of mobile communication networks usually coexist in the same district nowadays. In addition, to facilitate the convenience of cellular phone users, roaming is a necessary service. All of these put a strict requirement on the development of cellular phones because the cellular phones must support multiple mobile phone standards. The increased complexity of the cellular phone development lies mostly on the integration of RF frontend, especially RF power amplifiers. To support the popular quad-band mobile communication networks from 2G to 3G, seven different RF power amplifiers are currently required to be integrated into one cellular phone. The novel polar transmitter architecture is proposed to handle the issue of RF power amplifier integration in the multi-standard cellular phones. The polar transmitter amplifies the RF signal using a high-efficiency switch-type power amplifier and preserves RF signal linearity using signal magnitude modulation. With the polar transmitter to be developed, the number of RF power amplifiers can be reduced to two from seven. Since much fewer RF power amplifiers need to be integrated into one cellular phone, the complexity of integration and cost of manufacture can be significantly reduced.
