Choreography and apply of the musical dance exploration: A Case Study on the Musical《Laundry》in Korea
The Korean original musical “Laundry” has been debuted at the Korean National Theatre since 2005. It is one of the most representative works by Korean small theater musicals. It was created by the director Qiu Minzhu and adapted from his personal experiences. As a graduation project ，the musical was loved by audiences all over South Korea. The musical has been played in the Korea University Road Theatre for more than a decade and the box office continued to rise during this time, musical theatre enthusiasts from all over the world come Korea to watch. The script told a story about several normal workers who came to Seoul to look for their dreams. It showed the life of how normal citizens struggled to survive, and how their dreams fade gradually. Like the lyrics said ‘when washing clothes, we give everything we have to the wind. Our life can go with the wind’. ’Washing clothes’ is a metaphor for the pass of time, sorrow and annoyance. The 8 actors performed 30 characters in the drama, making the plotand rhythm exciting and pleasant. This drama was performed by Japanese in Tokyo, Japan, 2012. The Chinese version was debuted in Beijing Da Yin Theater, 2017. The author, Song Longgao, also participated in the show as an actor and a dancing instructor. Together with the director of the Autumn Democracy and Korean dance designer Xu, she instructed all actors’ body movements and performance for munder their characteristicsduring the rehearsal, especially the instruct and adaptation in dancing. This report uses the musical “Laundry” as an example to explore the creation and application of musical dances. It aims to find the exploration, application and techniques in creation through interview methods, field surveys, and data analysis methods.
