The purpose of this study is to explore the implementation of the basic musicianship training for music talented students at Guo Hua Junior High School in Ilan County and the factors influencing students’ achievement in ear training, including the major instrument, gender, age and background of the students. This study examined the historical development of the music talented class and the current status of the basic musicianship curriculum at junior high schools in northern Taiwan. Research instruments employed in the study include a survey and test, distributed to 36 music talented students in Ilan County. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Since the special education was enacted, the numbers of the music talented classes increased rapidly, especially in the junior high school level. 2. The basic musicianship course is offered 2-3 hours per week and mostly last for three years in the music talented class at junior high schools in northern Taiwan. The enactments revealed the importance of the basic musicianship training. 3. The scores of the performance in major instruments of the music talented students had a significant correlation with their ear training scores. 4. The second-grade students’ ear training scores were better than those of first-grade students in interval and two-part melody items. 5. The time when students began to receive the ear training significantly influenced their ear training scores in rhythm, atonal and two-part melody items. 6. The music learning background significantly influenced students’ ear training scores in interval, rhythm, tonal, atonal and two-part melody items.
