Improvements and Applications of the Image-Based Distance Measuring System
(2007-01-19) Ming-Chih Lu; Chen-Chien Hsu; Yin Yu Lu
The paper presents practical improvements on the Image-Based Distance Measuring System, achieving the capability of 3-dimensional measurement of distant objects. The configuration of the proposed measurement is very simple, consisting of only a single CCD camera and two laser projectors formed in parallel. Because of the disposition of the laser projectors and the CCD camera, two laser-projected spots will appear on the same scan line of CCD images. Based on an established relationship between pixel counts and photographing distance, 3-D measurement and area information of distant objects can be obtained by using only one scan line in the image frame.

A novel image-based area measurement system is proposed in this paper, we can convert the pixels of object into real area by image processes. No matter the system is vertical to the measuring plane or not and the height of system, it could calculates arbitrary two points on the image convert into the actual distance. This paper proposed a new structure for achieve our goal, there are four laser projects and camera fixed on same base, then generate four laser spots on the object or measurement plant, and assume connect each two laser spots as parallel lines, finally it could simulated a ruler in the image. Without consider photography angle for this system, it can measure area of floor or height of building.

In this paper, a measuring system using IBDMS and PLDMS method through a CCD camera is proposed. The proposed measuring system is an easy-to-construct system to measure the three-dimensional rectangular objects by using a single CCD camera. In our proposed measuring system, the ruler for the measured objects can easily be efined by two laser points for a far distance or by a know-size and easy-to-get paper money for a near distance. For the far distance, the corrosion surface objects can be measured by ready lasers system. Otherwise, when the measured object stays in the near distance, an easy-to-get paper money can be used. Based on the known parameters, the proposed measurement can release the limitations of the photography angle. After measuring threedimensional information, we can further to compute the volume of rectangular objects.
