Item An adaptive data replication technique with online advertising for P2P VoD services.(International Association of Computer Science and Information Technology Press, 2012-10-01) Ho, Chien-Peng; Chia-Ling HsiehThis study aims to construct an agent-driven advertising framework for allowing agent-peers to distribute ad-videos to their potential customers and robust online marketing communication channels for smooth functioning of the Video-on-Demand (VoD) systems in unstructured Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay networks. In particular, the framework does not rely on a centralized collection server, but depends more on agent-peers that better meet customer needs and can transform a server load into scalable bandwidths with availability and high system reliability. However, in large-scale networks, it is important to reduce the load imposed on the server resources. This paper examines the problem of characterizing and assessing the local impact of the load imposed on the peer-level underlay networks by analyzing the kurtosis properties of packet inter-arrival time distribution on a P2P network. In addition, we analyzed the observed global impact of the load imposed for film-data replication to eliminate potential network bottlenecks using an extended density-based clustering (DENCLUE) algorithm of P2P overlay traffic on the agent-level underlay. The results indicate appropriate replication effective in system performance. It also points to the enormous potential of agent-level advertising in enhancing predetermined marketing objectives.Item An Alternative Analysis of "V de/bu C" Constructions in Mandarin.(2012-06-10) Lin, Chienju; Hsiao, Huichen S.Item Analyses of the BA-construction? It has been an accepted fact that English speakers express feelings and use direct languages more frequently than Chinese. However, little attention has been paid to the disparities between Chinese and English communicative strategies in computer-mediated settings. This study compares how Internet users give support to Taiwanese and American well-known athletes. Data drawn from Taiwan and U.S. websites indicate different degrees of preference in supportive strategies, reflecting a sharp contrast between low-context/individualistic culture and high-context/collective culture. Taiwanese athletes tend to receive support directed toward a shortened social distance. U.S. athletes are primarily supported by more expressive strategies. Nevertheless, the preparatory and compensatory moves exhibit cross-cultural similarities: Both Taiwanese and U.S. athletes are commonly greeted by first names or nicknames. Supporters of both languages also prefer revealing identity, using informal complimentary closings, and omitting salutations or signatures. The conclusions indicate that influences of Internet characteristics are as significant as cultural backgrounds on the directness and formality of online support. This suggests that the awareness of language cultures and communication media is crucial for language learners in building and mastering successful intercultural communication in networking communities.Item Chinese Distance Teaching: An NTNU-UH Project(1997-11-23) Hsin, Shih-ChangItem Chinese Speakers Do not Think about Time Differently than Portuguese Speakers.(2011-11-06) Sanvido, G.
